medical scales

weighing newborns to toddlers.

Mechanical baby scales with a 25kg capacity are designed to transition from weighing newborns to toddlers. In the mechanical category, you generally have two choices: high-precision balance beams (for clinical accuracy) or hanging dial scales (for portability and field use).

1. High-Precision Balance Beam Scales

These are the most accurate mechanical options. They use sliding weights on a metal bar to find the exact weight. While many top medical brands (like Seca) cap their infant beam scales at 16kg or 20kg, there are "Toddler/Pediatric" versions that reach higher capacities.

Model

Capacity

Precision (Graduation)

Key Feature

Health O Meter 1522KL

65 kg (130 lbs)

20 g

Heavy-duty steel beam; includes integrated measuring tape.

Rice Lake RL-MIS-20

70 kg (154 lbs)

20 g

Dual-purpose for infants (with tray) and toddlers.

Wunder SuperBaby

20 kg (44 lbs)*

10 g

Best for 10g precision, though slightly below 25kg limit.

Note: If you strictly require 10g precision, the Seca 745 and Wunder SuperBaby are the gold standards, but they typically max out at 16kg to 20kg.

2. Hanging Dial Scales (Salter-Style)

Commonly used in global health initiatives and remote clinics, these are robust, portable, and easily handle 25kg.

  • Standard Specs: Most 25kg hanging scales (like those from Detecto or Salter) feature a large, easy-to-read dial.
  • Accuracy: These typically have 100g divisions. Finding a mechanical hanging scale with 10g divisions is very difficult because the dial would be too crowded to read accurately.
  • Included Accessories: They usually come with "weighing trousers" or a sling to safely suspend the infant.

3. Key Specifications to Look For

  • Zero Adjustment (Tare): Ensure the scale has a manual knob to reset the needle to zero. This is vital for subtracting the weight of a sling, diaper, or blanket.
  • Damping Mechanism: Look for scales with "damping" or "stabilization." This prevents the needle from bouncing excessively if the baby is active, allowing for a faster reading.
  • Build Material: For a 25kg capacity, ensure the internal levers and hooks are made of galvanized or stainless steel to prevent the mechanism from stretching or bending under the heavier load of a toddler.

Comparison: Beam vs. Dial

Choose a Balance Beam if the scale will stay in one place (clinic/home) and you need the highest possible precision (20g) for medical tracking.

Choose a Hanging Dial if you need portability or are weighing older, heavier toddlers where 50g–100g precision is acceptable.
